announcing x402 payments for autonomous agents

what is x402?

x402 is an open protocol for machine-to-machine payments on the web. inspired by the HTTP 402 "payment required" status code, it defines a standard way for servers to request payment and for clients — including autonomous AI agents — to fulfill those requests without human intervention.

instead of traditional API key billing with monthly invoices, x402 enables pay-per-request economics. an agent sends a request, receives a 402 response with payment details, completes the payment via a crypto wallet, and retries — all in milliseconds.

how it works with dropspace

we've integrated x402 into the dropspace developer API as an alternative authentication method. alongside traditional API keys, agents can now authenticate using wallet-based credentials and pay for each API call individually.

the flow is simple:

  1. an agent calls any dropspace API endpoint without an API key
  2. dropspace responds with HTTP 402 and a payment facilitator URL
  3. the agent completes payment through the facilitator
  4. the agent retries the original request with the payment receipt
  5. dropspace validates the receipt and processes the request

this means AI agents don't need pre-provisioned API keys or billing accounts. they can start using dropspace immediately with just a crypto wallet.

use cases for AI agents

x402 unlocks fully autonomous launch workflows. here are some scenarios that are now possible without any human setup:

  • autonomous product launches — an agent monitors a GitHub repository, detects a new release, creates a dropspace launch, generates content with AI, and publishes across platforms
  • multi-agent coordination — one agent handles content creation while another manages scheduling and publishing, each paying for their own API usage
  • marketplace integrations — third-party agents can offer "launch on dropspace" as a service to their users without managing API keys
  • research and monitoring — agents that track product launches across platforms can use dropspace's API to aggregate and analyze launch performance data

getting started

the x402 integration is available today on the dropspace developer API. if you're building an AI agent that needs to create and manage product launches, you can start using it immediately.

for agents that prefer traditional authentication, API keys remain fully supported. you can also combine both methods — use API keys for predictable workloads and x402 for burst or experimental usage.

a free tier is available for getting started, giving agents enough credits to test the full workflow before committing to paid usage. check out the developer docs for integration details.
